West LRT landscaping designs are online

Sarcee Trail/17 Avenue S.W. landscape planThrough fall 2011, the West LRT project team began meeting with community representatives to review landscaping concepts for the West LRT construction areas. Two public open houses were hosted (January 25 and 26, 2012) where members of the public reviewed and commented on the proposed landscaping designs.

The display boards shown at the two open houses are posted on the Public Events and Meetings web page, where you can download and view the proposed designs.

Through 2012 and 2013, the West LRT construction zone will be landscaped back as close as possible to its original look. More than 1,700 trees and other plantings will revitalize the construction zone along Bow Trail, 17 Avenue S.W. and Sarcee Trail.

How to minimize the impact on your commute:

How We Build the West LRT video: Track work

    West LRT Bicycle Route Improvements

    Open - 24 Street S.W. pedestrian bridge

What does "flooding" have to do with track construction? Hint: water is not part of this procedure.

You can find out by watching the latest "How We Build the West LRT" video about track construction on the Construction Overview web page. In the third anf inal video in the series, you will learn about flooding and regulating the track, as well as the high temperatures used for thermite welding.

You can also watch "How We Build the West LRT" videos about the LRT elevated guideway and LRT tunnel construction on the Videos and Photos web page.

While work has been underway to construct the Wets LRT, The City's Transportation Planning has been planning how to connect Calgarians from their communities to LRT stations with new bike routes.

The City plans to implement bicycle improvements for all six West LRT station areas by the end of 2013. These improvements are part of LRT station Mobility Assessment Plans (MAP) to allow seamless and convenient cycling access to the West LRT line. To find out more about the new cycling routes click here on the link, West LRT Bicycle Route Improvements.

You can find each LRT station's MAP on their respective LRT station web page, such as the 45 Street Station web page.

A new pedestrian bridge designed to improve safety and access for pedestrians and cyclists is open over Bow Trail.

The new bridge is much wider than the old structure and offers more accessible pathway approaches with gradual inclines and curved ramps. It spans all six lanes of Bow Trail and the LRT route, providing a better access to bus stops on Bow Trail and connecting communities to the Bow River pathway system.

Cyclists and pedestrians can access the bridge on the north side from 24 Street S.W. and on the south side from 25A Street S.W.
